What Next? Diversity
Do you know about What Next? (www.whatnextculture.co.uk).
Are you interested in forming a What Next Diversity movement?
Will you join us for a Diversity Long Table on 27 November, 2-4pm?
The event will be sign language interpreted.
Calling all venues, organisations, artists, creative practitioners, leaders, thinkers, across generations, art forms and sectors, who feel passionately about diversity and creating change? And who believe that Diversity and diverse arts practitioners and organisations, should be at the heart of What Next? You are invited to a What Next? Diversity ‘Long Table’.
What Next? is a new movement seeking to enhance the national conversation about the value of arts and culture. It is led and determined by creative and cultural practitioners from a range of prolific arts venues and organisations, as well as independent artists and practitioners, uniting out of genuine concern for the current social, political and economic state of our nation. It is absolutely not a moaning shop, rather it is an engine room of new ideas and innovative ways of working...
A group of us who attended the What Next? National conference felt provoked to start a What Next? Diversity movement. We believe that Diversity is the life line of the UK. Without Diversity, there is no ‘great’ in Great Britain. Equally What Next? is nothing without diversity. Race, Equalities, disability, gender, diverse backgrounds, sexuality should be at the heart of the creative and cultural industries. New voices and new conversations are important to encourage at a time when far right politics blazes across the world, and cuts continue to threaten those without a strong voice.
We believe Diversity should be at the heart of a sector that hails innovation and risk-taking, since by their very nature diverse artists are entrepreneurial and committed to finding new ways and approaches.
Our aim is to bring together cultural practitioners (individuals and organisations) from across disciplines, who are passionate about diversity for open and honest conversations. Our intention is to have a series of inquiries/provocations that eventually lead to a series of actions and a new collaborative approach to this work that seeks out a shared understanding of equality and diversity within our sector. Perhaps we could meet regularly in different cultural spaces? Perhaps we could meet on line? The content of the meetings is open - determined only by what the members of the group consider to be the most pressing issues. We could invite specialist speakers (e.g. from the core What Next? group, from Councils, MP’s, social thinkers) to join our conversation and enable a lively diversity of perspectives. Hopefully our meetings will facilitate productive alliances and collaboration in public engagement and advocacy, and in future we hope to realise a series of actions – large and small - that lead us towards a sustainable and supportive environment for diversity and change.
Date: 2-4pm, Wednesday 27 November 2013
Venue: Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Rosebery Avenue. London EC1R 4TN.
